Gold for Om Prakash; Amanpreet corners glory

Om Prakash of Army won the gold in men's air pistol, 4.7 points ahead of Omkar Singh of Navy, in the 54th National shooting championship at the Dr. Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad, on Thursday.

However, it was Amanpreet Singh of ONGC who walked away with the tag of ‘Champion of Champions`, and a cash purse of Rs.51,000, in a mixed competition for the top eight pistol shooters, based on their performances in the finals.

The talented Amanpreet was understandably thrilled to have asserted himself in a strong field, with shots of 10.9, 10.5 and 9.8 in the three-shot climax to beat Om Prakash by 1.2 points.

Omkar Singh, Jitu Rai, Shweta Chaudhary, Samaresh Jung, Sonia Rai and Nausheen Fatima were the others to figure in the Champion of Champions contest, and were eliminated in that order.

The disappointment in the climax apart, it was an encouraging fare from Om Prakash to clinch the gold after the silver in the free pistol event.

In the men's rifle prone event, Sanjeev Rajput of Navy clinched the gold with a 1.6 point margin over Surendra Rathod. .

Anisa Sayyed won the women's sport pistol gold on expected lines, as she beat Rahi Sarnobat by five points, with a total of 777.1, that included a 202.1 in the final.
