London Paralympics silver medallist H.N. Girisha has been named in the 10-member Indian contingent which will participate in the IPC Athletics World Championships from July 19 to 28 at Lyon, France.

All the 10 athletes have qualified in ‘A’ category. Girisha will compete in the men’s High Jump T-42 event while Devendra Jhajharia, recipient of the Padma Shri award last year, will compete in javelin throw.

Jhajharia, India’s second gold medallist in Paralympics after Murlikant Petkar, was selected based on his performance at the Berlin event where he threw his javelin to a distance of 55.34m.

Jhajharia, who is a one-armed javelin thrower from Rajasthan, had won gold medal in the javelin throw at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens. He set up a new world record with 62.15m eclipsing the old one of 59.77m.

S.P. Sangwan has been named as the team leader.

The Championships will see more than 1,100 athletes from 99 countries in action, competing in 207 events.
