Gagan Narang beat a strong field which included world and Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra, in the shooting selection trials at the Karni Singh Range here on Monday.

After dominating the 50-metre rifle prone and the 3-position events, Narang led from start to finish to clinch the top spot in the 10-metre air rifle event. In the final, in which everyone started from zero, Chain got off to a great start to lead after the first three shots. Bindra began with a perfect 10.9 while Narang paced himself well to pull ahead after the ninth shot. He finished with 207.1 points to beat Sanjeev Rajput by 2.3 points.

Narang had taken a two-point lead over Rajput before the last two shots to decide the first place, and he widened it by another 0.3 points even though both had an identical 10.6 on the 20th shot.

In the women’s 50-metre rifle 3-position event, Meena Kumari pipped National champion Tejaswini Sawant by 0.7 points, despite a 9.1 last shot.

In standard pistol Gurpreet Singh of the Army shot 575 to top the list ahead.
