“He was all ‘fuelled up’ for the gold,” said an ecstatic Ryan Fernando, who has been ‘honing the diet-chart’ for the two time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar.

A bronze medallist at Beijing four years ago, Sushil Kumar finished with a silver hue this time, going down 1-4 to Japanese Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu in the 66kg freestyle wrestling event. The 29-year old railway employee is a vegetarian to the core. “He has been under my dietary program for the last six years,” explained the Bangalore-based Ryan, founder, Qua Nutrition and advisor at Bodyfuelz, a nutrition clinic here at Indiranagar. “If you have noticed, Sushil was mature and tactically prepared for the final. It was sheer bad luck that robbed him of a gold,” added Ryan.

“Training well will not be sufficient if your body gives up,” is what Ryan impresses upon and he recommends beetroot juice (high in carbs) for wrestlers. “This keeps one going and coconut water (a perfect mixture of electrolytes and sweetness) and options of potassium-rich food like nuts, bananas and peaches also help,” Ryan said.

Sushil’s fellow-wrestler and bronze medallist at the London Olympics, Yogeshwar Dutt, swimmer Gagan Ullalmath, besides a host of celebrities are among Ryan’s clientele.
