Liam Tancock and Francesca Halsall have given England their first two gold medals in the Commonwealth Games pool, with Halsall upsetting world champion Marieke Guehrer of Australia in the women’s 50-metre butterfly.

Tancock, the world champion and world record-holder, won the men’s 50 backstroke on Tuesday. In another early final, Leiston Pickett gave Australia its fourth gold of the six-day swimming meet with a win in the women’s 50-metre breaststroke.

Halsall finished with a time of 26.24 seconds to edge Guehrer by three one-hundredths of a second. Another Australian, Emily Seebohm, was third in 26.29 to take bronze.
