Dope test on medallists

August 30, 2011 01:15 am | Updated 01:15 am IST - PUNE

The boxers who finished in the top four at the 27th National junior boxing championships had to wait a long time before getting to wear the medals around their necks. Each one of the 26 finalists, spread over 13 weight categories, entering the ring for the final bouts on Sunday night at the Balewadi Sports Complex, had to submit urine samples for testing.

It is learnt that the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) also got all the losing semifinalists to give samples, apart from fighters chosen at random from the preliminary rounds. The federation also cracked the whip on age restrictions at events like the National juniors, limited to u-16 boxers. Fifteen juniors found to be over-aged from among those competing at Balewadi, were removed.
