Delhi International chess: Baryshpolets triumphs

Ukrainian Grandmaster Andrey Baryshpolets led the overseas GMs’ charge into the top nine places of the Rs. 30-lakh Parsvnath Delhi International Open chess tournament here on Friday.

Baryshpolets was the unlikely champion after he topped a three-way tie, at eight points, following decisive battles on the top three boards in the 10th and final round.

Seeded eight, Baryshpolets defeated Deepan Chakkravarthy in 57 moves and Ivan Popov crushed Vietnam’s Nguyen Van Huy after 36 turns.

Official passes away

Meanwhile, Azees, 62-year-old chess official from Kozhikode and a participant in Category ‘C’ here, died following a heart attack on Thursday.

This avid chess-loving bachelor collapsed at the venue before the commencement of the seventh round.
