MOP Vaishnav’s Gayathri Govindaraj, taking part in heptathlon, erased a 10-year-old record in the 100m hurdles of the A.L. Mudaliar athletics meet at the Nehru Stadium here on Monday. By clocking a time of 13.7 seconds, the 23-year-old overcame the one set by K.N. Priya (14.0s) in 2004-05. P. Deepika of MOP finished second but still equalled the meet record.
Gayathri has, for over a year, shifted from being a hurdler and a triple jumper, to heptathlon, which she hopes will give her a better chance to win a medal at the National and international levels. Loyola, with eight gold medals, is in first place while DB Jain is in second with two golds in the men’s section. MOP Vaishnav, too, is in first position with eight golds and Ethiraj (2) is in second place in the women’s.
