Day two preview
More golds on offer in the pool - five to be precise. The Cyclers get busy in the Velodrome and there are three golds on offer.
Shooting and Weightlifting - supposed to be Indian bastions - offer a combined total of six golds while there are three golds to be won in wrestling.
Day's roundup
Arguably the biggest upset of the day was the Scottish women's team holding the Indian team to a 1-1 draw in Hockey. Rebecca Adlington, one of the few worldclass swimmers who made the trip, finished with a bronze but Wales' Jazz Carlin created the first major story of the Games as she became the first Welsh women in 36 years to win anything in the pool.
India, expected to do lots in the weightlifting arena, got four medals - but did not get the one that matters. They got two silvers and two bronzes as Malaysia and Nigeria trumped India to golds in the men's 56kg and the women's 48 events respectively.
The Indian swimming team created ripples by qualifying to the finals of the 4x100 mtr freestyle but flattered to deceive as they were outclassed by almost all the other teams in the finals.
Australia, favourites to top the medals tally. lived up to the billing as they won four golds - and they were only eight on offer today. With three of those four golds coming in the pool, they also got one in artistic gymnastics were they came from behind to pip England.

Indian women thrashed Sri Lanka 3-0 in their first match but then went down fighting to New Zealand 2-3 in the next Group D encounter at the Yamuna Sports Complex.
Meanwhile, Olympian Achanta Sharath Kamal did not play but the Indian men’s team hardly broke a sweat as they thrashed Vanuatu 3-0 in their first Group B match.
Some more information on Nicol David ahead of her meeting with Chinappa. David is current world number one, the first Asian women to achieve this landmark and has stayed there for a very long time. Easy then....

21:30 How about this for a tasy affair. Joshna Chinappa's reward for advancing into the pre-quarterfinals is a meeting against Malaysia's Nicol David. Meanwhile Saurav Ghosal will take on Peter Barker.
Slowly winding down on what has been a cracking opening day. Australia showed that they are still kings in the pool, India enjoyed mixed fortunes in weightlifting while England and Canada, along with India, have four medals each.

The weightlifting 56 kg winners.... Rao V.S. got the bronze, Sukhen Dey got the silver and Amirul Ibrahim got the gold.
So my dodgy math skills say that India have got 4 medals - two silvers and two bronzes - on the opening day. Australia, though, the clear winner on the opening day of the Games. There were eight golds on offer and they claimed four of them. And to be fair, no one would have expected less.
But don't even for one moment think that the day is over. Well..... in a sense, yes - there won't be any more medal ceremonies.... but there's still lot of action before the day is up.
Interesting.... Remember about a long delay before the start of the men's 4x100 mtr freestyle relay? World media speculating that a part of the ceiling plaster had found its way to the water.
20:30 A game of lawn bowls going on between Scotland and Botswana. And Scotland are leading. I, for even one moment, would not pretend to know the game. Scotland are up a set but trail in the second 3-2.
20:25 And the last medals for the day is decided. In the men's 56 kg weightlifting category. India once again get the silver and bronze. Malaysia gets the gold. Will get back to you on the names as soon as possible.
Any European Ryder Cup fans in here? If yes... you do have the right to jump and down and perform a wild jig. Magnificient scenes at Celtic Manor as Europe, after almost contriving to lose the Cup to U.S.A, have won it 14.5 to 13.5. Magnificient... But U.S.A will be devastated to say the least. If you remember, they were down a full three points (6.5 to 9.5) before performing a mini-miracle to tie things at 13.5 each. But Europe held their nerve to seal the deal.
The weightlifting in the men's 56 kg category is still going on but not anywhere close to finding the winner. There's still some lovely badminton action to follow.

19:20 India have drawn with Scotland 1-1 in women's hockey. The hosts will be disappointed but they at least managed to salvage a draw. South Africa, also in the same group, earlier in the day beat Trinidad and Tobago 12-0.

19:10 Emphatic victory for Mirza and Paes. 6-1, 6-0 against the pair from St. Lucia. What a way to begin a campaign.

The Indian pair are already a set up and are leading four love in the second set. They are playing Richelieu and Roheman of St. Lucia.

There were eight golds on offer today. So far seven have been decided... Australia the early pace-setters with four of them. But it's still early doors as far as the Games is concerned.

PTI has this report on the reactions following India's silver and bronze in the women's 48 kg weightlifting category....
Apologising for not winning the gold medal, Harnam Singh, India's weightlifting coach, said, “I want to say sorry to the whole nation for not winning the gold. We were sure to get a gold but Soniya failed to lift 76 kgs, which she was supposed to and that cost us the gold.”
“It was up to the player to lift the weight but she failed, so the blame primarily lies with her and then with me.
I would not say that we went wrong with the strategy or technique as our players are technically strong. It was just bad luck,” said Harnam.
Chanu too echoed her coach’s sentiments while expressing her disappointment. “I think God was not with me today. I am extremely disappointed with my performance. Although I won the first medal for India but I am sorry for my coach who had pinned high hopes on me. We were expecting nothing less than a gold,” said Chanu.

17:33: Dramatic last few turns saw England snatching the lead from Australia but the Aussies love to beat England. They reclaim the lead and hold on to it to claim the gold. England claims silver while South Africa gets the bronze. India were disappointing but it was a massive achievement for them to even compete at this level. Experience learnt surely.

Look away cricket fans. At stumps India are struggling at 55-4. The messiah of many an Indian comeback, Tendulkar, is still batting but has a lot of work to do.
Just been informed that Achieng Ajulu-Bushell, who finished second behind Jones in the first semifinal, is just 16 years. Amazing.

And time for all of us to catch our breath after a breathless last few minutes at the pool. What a cracking start to the opening day. India, meanwhile, will play Scotland in women's hockey in sometime.
Some depressing news if you are an Indian cricket fan. India are in early trouble in the fourth innings against Australia at Mohali. Chasing a tricky 216, they have scored 55 with the loss of four wickets. Sachin and Zaheer at the crease.
16:50 Le Clos of Republic of South Africa gets the gold. Their first of the games. England and Canada get the silver and bronze.
16:47 And the men's 200 mtr butterfly finals begin. A frenetic start to the action in the pool already. Can it get any better?
Isn't it a relief for all of these swimmers that Phelps isn't eligible to compete here?
Back to the men's 400 mtr freestyle.. Australia's Ryan Napolean bagged the silver while Scotland's David Carry got thr bronze. Olympic gold medallist David Davies had to settle for fourth.
16:40 More action from the pool. Australia's Alicia Coutts gets the gold in the women's individual 200 mtr medley. Compatriot Seebohm was leading at the 50 mtr mark but she has to settle for silver. Canada gets the bronze. Riveting start to the games.
16: 36 Ryan Cochrane of Canada gets the gold in the men's 400 mtr freestyle. It was a brilliant race from start to finish with the top four exchanging positions through out the race. Australia and Scotland bagged the silver and bronze respectively.

16:23: Would love to be in one of those podiums some day. Australia's Kylie Palmer is incredibly happy after taking Australia's first gold. Then she proceeds to give a few hugs to Carlin and Adlington.
16:20 Kumaresan wastes little time and attacks Yang from the off in the fourth set. After a punishing set of drives, she earns herself a few match-points. But Yang can save only one of them before Kumarasan closes out the match 3-1.
16:15 Back to the gripping contest between Yang and Kumaresan. It's the Indian girl who prevails in the third set. Fantastic stuff. Kumaresan is up 2-1 in this best of five encounter.
16:12 That's our first medal distribution ceremony then. In the Women's 48 kg weightlifting category. Nigeria's Augustina Nwaokolo - who got the gold - is all smiles. Well... but then who wouldn't?
16:08: English media reporting that Jazz Carlin's silver for Wales is Wales' first women's swimming medal in 36 years. What a story!!!
16:05 Back to TT. Yang gets back into the game as she beats Kumaresan 11-9 in the second stanza. It's now one-set apiece.

People who have been concerned with how Indian weightlifting has gone over the last few months will be delighted with this early haul.

15: 40 The first gold of the XIX CWG goes to Nigeria.... In the Women's weightlifting (48 kg category). India claims the silver and bronze. Heavily favoured to win the event, S. Chanu has to settle for silver.

India's Sandhya Rani Devi Atom got the bronze. A brace of medals for India already but Nigeria, I think, will lead the medals tally because of the gold. Will get back to you on that.

Among the things which will be of interest is Adlington's final in the pool and India's women's hockey game against Scotland.
