Two-time Tour de France champion Alberto Contador has decided to pull out of the cycling world championships later this month in Switzerland.
Contador spokesman Jacinto Vidarte said in an e-mail that the Spaniard, who won his second Tour title in July, is out-of-form and doesn’t want to prevent another rider with better chances of winning at the worlds.
Contador said: “After looking back at my season, and given the fact that I haven’t competed since the Tour de France, we have decided it was better to give up my place to someone else.”
The worlds road race is scheduled for September 27 at Mendrisio, Switzerland.
