Cesar Cielo of Brazil got his second gold medal at the swimming world championships on Saturday when the Brazilian defended his 50m freestyle title.
Cielo was in full command to add the freestyle sprint gold to that from the 50m butterfly in 21.52 seconds.
Italian Local Dotto secured his first medal at a major championships when he took the silver in 21.90, with Alain Bernard third for France in 21.92.
Cielo was only cleared to swim at the world championships last week by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after the body turned down an appeal by swimming’s governing body FINA against a decision taken by Brazilian officials to only issue Cielo and three others with a verbal warning after they had tested positive to the banned substance furosemide in May.
The swimmers said the forbidden substance came from a contaminated caffeine supplement.
The women’s 50m butterfly title went to Dutch Inge Dekker in 25.71 seconds, her first individual title in Shanghai to go with 4x100m freestylwe relay gold last weekend.
Defending champion and world record holder Therese Alshammar of Sweden took silver in 25.76 seconds. Melanie Henrique of France won the bronze in 25.86 seconds by the smallest possible margin, beating local favourite Lu Ying by just 0.01 seconds.
The finals of the women’s 200m backstroke, 800m freestyle, 4x100m medley relay, as well as the men’s 100m butterfly were set for later in the session.
