Chinese teenager Ye Shiwen recorded the fastest time of the year as she won the women’s 200-metre individual medley at the Guangzhou Asian Games.
The 14-year-old Ye fell behind in the first lap but quickly took the lead on Thursday night, finishing in 2 minutes and 9.37 seconds, 2.65 seconds faster than teammate Wang Qun. South Korea’s Choi Hye-ra was third.
The time was better than Australian Alicia Coutts’ 2-09.70 at the Commonwealth Games last month. Ye had earlier won the 400 IM, her time of 4-33.79 in that race was the world’s second best this year.
