Roshan Raj of Bangalore did all the running in the first half but, Yashas Chandra of Mysore played a scintillating second half to share the top berth with the former on the opening day of the CGC Cup golf tournament, a two-round open medal play event, at the par-72 Coimbatore Golf Club course in Chettipalayam here on Saturday.
Roshan worked pretty hard in the first nine holes to establish a two-stroke lead over Arvind Gurudev (BGC). Yashas was another two-stroke behind the leader.
But scores did not matter for Yashas as he believed in his ability to bounce. And, he did that in style with a surprising second half effort.
Yashas produced a one-under par. It was aided by eight pars and a birdie. Even as Yashas was making merry, Roshan faltered with ‘T’ shots on the 14th and 16th holes to scramble bogies and lose the crucial lead that he had earned early.
Meanwhile, Arvind played a steady back nine and placed himself one shot behind the joint leaders. Fifteen-year-old K. Suryakumar of Coimbatore inched his way up to the fifth position with a score of 79.
The senior open saw P.R. Ramakrishnan enjoy a seven-shot lead over Mohan Nambiar. He looks strong to win the title.
