Boxer Satish Solanki was on Tuesday handed down a milder sanction of six months suspension based on the production of a medical prescription to use a diuretic.
Solanki had tested positive for diuretic furosemide at the North India boxing championship at Gurgaon in January last. He pleaded that he had been prescribed Lasix, which contains furosemide, by Dr. M.K. Mehta.
The prescription was dated January 2, 2011; Solanki's sample was collected a week later. The panel, headed by Jasmeet Singh, stated that it was found from the evidence presented before the panel that the Haryana boxer had been suffering from high blood pressure and had been advised certain medicines.
The panel was of the opinion that imposing a suspension of two years would be “unjustly harsh”. He was to be reprimanded and suspended for a period of six months, commencing from the date of sample collection (January 9, 2011).
