NEW DELHI: Anish Bhanwala and Anhad Jawanda continued to assert junior prowess in the league of Olympians as they took turns to win the men’s rapid fire competition in the National shooting selection trials at the Dr. Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad.

In the third and fourth trials, first it was Anish who beat Olympian Gurpreet Singh 32-31 for the top slot after having topped qualification with 583 along with Neeraj Kumar.

On Sunday, it was Anhad Jawanda who beat another junior Shivam Shukla 33-31, shooting perfect five thrice in the final, including on the last two cards. He had a modest 575 in qualification, while Neeraj, who topped with 582, had to settle for third, ahead of Anish, Harpreet Singh and Aadeithya Joahal.

Olympic silver medallist Vijay Kumar made the final in the third trial, but he, along with Gurpreet, missed the final in the fourth with identical score of 574.

Repeated competition can often get on to the nerves of the shooters who had battled in the Kumar Surendra Singh championship before the trials.

It was the case in women’s air pistol as the former world record-holder Heena Sidhu and the reigning world junior champion Yashaswini Singh Deswal missed the final by one point after shooting identical score of 380.

It did emphasise the impressive quality of the shooters whose scores ranged from 385 to 381. Harveen Srao topped with 237.8 in the final as she beat Asian Games medallist Shweta Singh by 2.2 points while Priya Raghav took the third place.

Olympian Annuraj Singh, Shri Nivetha, Ruby Tomer, Sheetal Thorat and Poorva Gaikwad finished fourth to eighth.

In women’s rifle 3-position event, Shreya Saksena topped with 451.8, just 0.3 point ahead of Raj Choudhary. To her credit, Shreya had placed second in qualification with 580, one point behind Gaayathri Nithyanandam, who eventually took the fifth spot. Anjum Moudgil beat Aditi Singh for the third place while Tejaswini Sawant, Dilreen Gill and Anjali Bhagwat were placed sixth to eighth.
