Basketball: Jain University emerges the champion

Simonelle (24 pts) and Roshini (22 pts) did the bulk of the scoring as Jain University (Bangalore) defeated MOP Vaishnav College (Chennai) 68-57 to emerge champion in the JASA South India-level inter-collegiate basketball tournament for women here on Sunday.

Earlier, Teresian College (Mysore) edged out Providence College (Calicut) 70-65 for the third place.

Jain University took home the Jayalakshmi Memorial Ever Rolling Trophy and a cash award of Rs. 15,000. Also, two of its players Sandhya Manjunath and Roshini won the ‘most valuable player and ‘best post player’ awards respectively.

Sakthi Sugars Pvt. Ltd trustee and board member Gowri Manickam, regional senior manager, sports and youth welfare Rajamahendiran and Jayalakshmi Sports Academy secretary Baboo Vivekanandaon gave away the prizes.

The results:

Final: Jain University (Bangalore) 68 (Simonelle 24, Roshini 22) bt MOP Vaishnav (Chennai) 57 (Divya 18, Gomathi 14).

Third place: Teresian College (Mysore) 70 (Navaneetha 20, Kavana 20) bt Providence (Calicut) 65 (Osheen 26).

Semifinals: MOP 61 (Akshaya 17, Hema 9) bt Providence 50 (Osheen 11, Shilpa 10); Jain 56 (Simonelle 17, Roshini 19) bt Teresian 40 (Navaneetha 21).
