Australia defended its artistic gymnastics gold medal at the Commonwealth Games beating England at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium here on Tuesday.

Georgia Bonora, A. Brennan, Emily Little, L. Mitchell and Georgia Wheeler gathered 163.7 points to exhibit their supremacy over the English girls Imogen Cairns, Laura Edwards, Jocelyn Hunt and C. Lindsley who had 158.2 points.

Canada (Catherine Dion, K. Klarenbach, Cynthia Lemieux-Guillemette, Gabby May and Emma Willis) took bronze with 154.75 points.

The Australians showed their consistency by performing well in almost all of the equipments. They fumbled on the beam, where the team got its only sub-40 score. That allowed traditional rival England to catch up a little bit. However, the Aussie women improved a few notches to maintain their stronghold. India (Meenakshi, Priti Das, Roma Joglekar, Dipa Karmakar and Debjani Samanta) finished in the eighth and last place with 124.3 points.

The home side gave its best performance in the vault to garner 39.15 points. — Principal Correspondent
