Newly-crowned world chess champion Viswanathan Anand and runner-up Boris Gelfand on Thursday met Russian President Vladimir Putin over a cup of tea in his residence.
Anand, who clinched his fifth World championship title yesterday, beating Gelfend in a tie-breaker 2.5-1.5 after their 12-game affair ended in a draw, told that he had learnt chess in a Soviet cultural centre in his hometown when he was a child.
“So we brought this on ourselves!” Mr. Putin said.
Mr. Putin heaped praise on both the players for their “outstanding game.”
This was Anand’s fourth world title in a row. The Indian chess wizard bagged his first world title in 2000 before winning three in a row in 2007, 2008 and 2010. He has been the world champion since 2007.

I wish Anand did not have wear the NIIT logo ... it is a jarring sight.
The NIIT,prominently displayed in bright white against a dark background,stands out as a
sore thumb. It could have been well avoided; if,for reasons of contract,it had to be worn,then
at least it could have been muted sufficiently.Nonetheless,it was graceful on the part of the
five term(?) (president/ prime minister)Putin to invite the two grandees of the current chess
world,with Anand,the five times world champion,for chai and chat!
Sure he proved a grandmaster in this game. But I was amazed when I recently learned that he is LIVING OUTSIDE INDIA (in spain if I remember it right)! Perhaps india is not as much suitable to his personal liking? Now look at this weird way of proving NATIONALITY or PRIDE IN RACE PERHAPS - Jayamma is quick to announce 2CRORE - which he might be thinking - Jayamma you better give it to those who dont have a place to live or clothes, medicines for basic cure in TN!!
I wonder where does Jayamma get that 2 CRORES from - under her anty? or PUBLIC FUNDS?

Anand You are great humble and silent over your greatest achievement by any Indian Sportsman not beating drums bosting yourself. I am happy and wish your parents . It is a proud moment for them. I can understanding being one myself grandfather. Let all prosperity bestowed on you including Bharathrathna which is over due.
There is a saying in Tamil,"valartha Kada ,Marbil Panjathu"meaning a brought up one working against
the person who brought him up.Putin has touched on this aspect without knowing this saying in tamil.Anand has saved the Kings in many battles on the board.The Britishers could appreciate that much better
than Russians.In Tamil legends kings have won many battles themselves.Long live Anand and long

I had the rare opportunity of meeting this humble and humorous world
champion while at work. Besides being the master of the game, what I
remember most about him is his simplicity and humility.
Vishwanathan is beyond any comparision. I think we should not compare one sportperson to another one because every sportperson has made india proud of by his own contribution in his own way.
This is all about Vishy, why drag Sachin in to this, M V Chilukuri? Pathetic...
Anand is mentioning about Tal Chess Club which started in 70s in Soviet Cultural Centre in the then Madras. As a former chess player we all started our competitive chess there. Anand used to frequent there and I still remember how quickly he vanquished his opponents and with more than 3 decades passed, Anand still retains that rattling capacity. I wish Anand godspeed.

Please stop bringing Sachin into any discussion involving Viswanathan Anand. Please learn to appreciate the goodness in every player. There is no need to compare Sachin with Anand here. They have both contributed massively to Indian sports in some way
We only hope that our newspaper will make a clarion call for conferring the coveted title of Bharat Ratna on vishy Anand and dhyan chand.
A lot of hue and cry was made on the listless centuries scored by Sachin, who was never a match winner in his career and who always succumbed under high pressure and must win battles. True to a south Indian style, Vishy anand remains humble and affectionate despite his monumental achievements.
We saw it in IPl recently. CSK despite two titles and 2 runner up, they took the victories in their stride and got on with other jobs. KKR made a hulla gulla about it all over India, even getting a governor into trouble.
A rare genius that Vishwanathan Anand is. He deserves to be lauded for
his exceptional prowess and achievements in the game of Chess. He has
inspired a generation of Indian players of not only Chess but other
sports, too. Congratulations to 'VISHY' for making India proud.

No doubt lara ,paes and anand is great we cannot compare each of them with each other.
Each sport personality is different from other and each are great in their own manner
Why always comparing one sport person to other????They r the best in their sport...if u go to carribean they will say lara is not as great as sobers or richrads...lets celebrate the masters on their sport...congrats vishy...once again u made the whole country proud

Chess is a game which tests your mental power ands its strength to withstand the pressure.The person who is good at chess will be good at all the fields because of the hidden qualities the game it inducts in the person who plays. Mr Anand has the high quality in ending rapid chess always in his favor. You can compare this game with the genius Bobby Fischer the King of chess.Another peculiar quality of this game is its dependence of memory which is advantage to young persons
And Chess has origin in India while cricket is english in its roots...

great to know atleast one politician, albeit a foreign one is acknowledging Anand's achievements. unlike our politicians who do not seem to have any knowledge about what is going on in chess and that an Indian is the grandmaster. they only know how to heap praises on the Indian cricket team.

Vishwanathan is an outstanding sportperson in India one can't even compare Sachin Tendulkar or Leander Paes. There is always Sir Don Bradman way ahead of Sachin at anytime. Moreover, Sachin Tendulkar could not even score a century in WC finals or 4th innings of a Test match when it is required. More over, he will never score a Triple Hundred forget about scoring 400 like Brian Lara. However, Anand is outstanding in Chess!
Kudos to Vishy for his triumph.It was a very competitive match worthy of World Chess final.The physical and mental tough is key over long periods of play.Patience is the key. it was simply amazing experience watching Vishy and Boris Gelfand battle it out for three weeks.Hope he kees it up for long time to come like Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov earlier.
