Giant-killer Priyank Tyagi toppled four prominent archers to claim a bronze and a gold medal in the elimination rounds on the second day of the third National ranking archery tournament at the Yamuna Sports Complex here on Saturday.

In testing conditions and in an elite field, Tyagi, a World Cup team gold winner in Antalya in 2008, stayed composed to give a series of good performances.

In the windy morning session, Tyagi scalped Rahul Banerjee 7-3 in the pre-quarterfinals before losing to Atanu Das in the semis. He defeated Jayanta Talukdar in the tie-breaker to claim the bronze medal.

Tyagi excelled in the evening session and got the better of Olympian Mangal Singh Champia 6-2 in the semifinals to set up a title clash with Tarundeep Rai, who had sailed to win the gold medal in the first session.

In the final, Tyagi took a 4-0 lead with identical sets of scores (10, 9, 9). Rai took the third one to close the gap to two points. However, Tyagi matched the seasoned Rai to tie in the last two sets and emerge as the champion with a 6-4 verdict.

“I am feeling good now and my form is fine. I have worked hard on my fitness and it is showing results,” said 26the -year-old Tyagi. “This year I have been doing well and I have won the all India Police championship apart from this.”

Rimil Buriuly, an Asian Games team bronze medallist, overcame her disappointing loss to star archer Deepika Kumari in the final in the morning to record a 6-2 win over Deepika in the final in the second session. Deepika led 2-0 by winning the first set.

However, Rimil fought back to bag the next two and stay 4-2 ahead. Deepika levelled in the penultimate set before Rimil hit the target to post a 6-4 victory.
