The final of the 112th amateur golf championship of India will be fought between young Viraj Madappa of Kolkata and Delhi’s Shubhankar Sharma over 36 holes at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club.

In the semifinals of the Tata Steel-sponsored tournament on Saturday, Madappa halted his Malaysian opponent Abel Tam 7 & 6, while Sharma defeated Arshad Ali 4 & 3.

Tam, suffering from a stomach ailment, was not his usual self. All square at the end of two holes, the 15-year-old East India and all-India junior champion Madappa jumped to 4-up by the ninth and closed the match on the 12th hole itself for a 7 & 6 victory. His strokeplay round for the 12 holes of regulation play was 2-under but an ailing Tam failed to lift his game and the contest unfortunately turned out to be one-sided.

The results: Semifinals: Shubhankar Sharma bt Arshad Ali 4 & 3; Viraj Madappa bt Abel Tam (Mas) 7 & 6. — Special Correspondent
