Alicia Coutts, the Australian sensation, is fast emerging as the golden girl of the Commonwealth Games, as she remained unstoppable for a third time in four days.
On Thursday, the 24-year-old added the 100m butterfly title to the 200m individual medley and 100m freestyle titles in style, leading from almost start to finish of the race.
In the absence of favourite Fran Halsall (England), who would only finish a poor 10th in the semifinals after being laid low by illness on Wednesday night, Coutts accounted for whatever little challenge that was posed to her by Ellen Gandy (also from England). Coutts swept into the front of the pack with power-packed strokes almost straightaway and then raced to a memorable triumph at 57.53s. Gandy came second at 58.06s ahead of Welsh Jemma Lowe (58.42s).
