Satyendra Singh of Services shot down the men’s 50m rifle 3 position gold in the shooting competitions of the 35th National Games here on Friday.

The lone final of the day saw the 30-year-old Army Subedar emerge victorious, after a shoot-off with Swapnil Kusale of Maharashtra. The two had finished with an identical total of 445.8 points. In the tie-breaker, Satyendra came up with a 10.3 while Swapnil could manage only 10.0.

Deepak Kumar (Haryana) and Surendra Rathod (Services) were the early leaders through the first phase with a score line of 149.6 and 148.5 points at the end of the three rounds in kneeling. Into the prone, the lead changed hands with Chain Singh (Services) surging ahead.

Chain Singh looked to be on course as he led with a total of 399.4 points into the elimination stage after the standing round.

Parida Nigam (Odisha) and Rahul Poonia (Uttar Pradesh) were the first to be eliminated as the field was reduced to six. Deepak (402.3), Surendra (415.6) and Sanjeev Rajput (424.6 points) followed them. Chain, whose form had slumped considerably by then, was forced to settle for the bronze with 434.9.

Satyendra was in the lead at that stage with 426.6 points, enjoying a differential of 1.1 points over Swapnil. But then, the Army man was able to find an 8.9 compared to 10.3 fired by his Maharashtra rival and this led to the shoot-off.
