National champion Himanshu Kumar Chang of Uttar Pradesh came up with a record-breaking show on the final day of the weightlifting competition here on Thursday.
The Commonwealth championship senior gold medallist impressed the crowd with a record effort in clean and jerk in only his second attempt. The old record stood at 204 but Chang did one better with a 205. It was good enough to boost his tally to 358 and seal the men’s plus-105kg gold. Chang was not content and decided to go for a 210. With the crowd by his side, he went flat out but failed.
In the women’s section, Haryana’s Kavita Devi and Punjab’s Geeta Rani dazzled in their respective weight categories. The former had to fight it out against a determined M. Parnei Chong Kom of Assam. It was a tie at 218 but Kavita, with a lesser bodyweight, clinched the top position. The results:
