Glamour stars to stay out of the Games

February 06, 2015 12:21 am | Updated 12:21 am IST - Thrissur:

An air of uncertainly prevailed over the participation of the pugilists in the boxing events of the ongoing National Games. That seems to have come to an end with about 20 teams confirming their availability for the events scheduled to begin at Triprayar from February 6.

But top international stars have decided to stay out of the Games fearing expulsion or suspension by Boxing India (BI). BI had clearly told its affiliated members to refrain from participating or face withdrawal of membership and expulsion or suspension of its boxers.

The anxiety among the boxers was quite visible. While some have decided to march ahead boldly, others plan to get back quickly to their hometown.

“They are afraid to even stay back here to watch the events,” said a few state coaches. “It is sad that such things are happening. It will crush their career,” they said.

"We have been preparing for more than a month. They could not give their cent per cent in training because there’s so much of confusion. This will certainly affect the team’s performances,” said the deputy Chef de Mission of Mizoram, Lalduhkimn.

Scoring system a worry

The participating coaches and players also pointed out that the old system of scoring will be followed at the Games as the only computerised scoring machine is with the BI.

“Our players are all used to the new scoring system and a sudden change in the scoring system can further affect their performances.”

They feel it’s time BI and IOA resolve the issue quickly and shake hands for the sake of the boxers.

BI President Sandeep Jajodia and Secretary General Jay Kowli could not be reached for comment.
