Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has no safety concerns over Sunday’s Indian Grand Prix, the first major motorsport event since the tragic deaths of British driver Dan Wheldon and Italy’s Marco Simoncelli in separate races.
Wheldon was killed in a 15—car pile—up in an IndyCar race in Las Vegas last week while Simoncelli died due to injuries sustained in a crash in the Malaysian MotoGP on Sunday.
“In Formula One we do everything possible to secure the safety of the drivers and the spectators. I’m very happy the new circuit in India has been built to conform to our safety requirements,” Ecclestone was quoted as saying by ‘Daily Mail’.
India’s inaugural F1 race will be held at the Buddh International Circuit, built at a cost of around USD 215 million.
The last Formula One drivers to be killed during competition were Roland Ratzenberger and three—time world champion Ayrton Senna, who died on the same weekend at Imola in 1994.
