Mahindra Racing ropes in foreign riders

Marcel Schrotter, an 18-year-old from Germany and Danny Webb,19, from Great Britain will ride for Mahindra Racing in the 125cc at the FIM Road Racing World Championships (MotoGP) for the 2011 season.

TheMahindra Group introduced the two foreign riders at the companyheadquarters on Friday.Mahindra’s entry into the MotoGP happened in the wake of the Indiancompany acquiring Engines Engineering from Italy, involved intechnical support for MotoGP teams since 2003 and construction of racebikes. Mahindra Racing motorcycle for the Road Racing WorldChampionship is designed and developed by the Italian firm.

The MotoGP, established in 1949, involves 18 events held across 14 nations, starting from Qatar in March. Races are held in MotoGP, Moto 2 and 125cc categories. “The focus is on making a mark at MotoGP, building the company brand, so we have gone in for talented young riders,” said Hemant Luthra (President of Systech, Mahindra & Mahindra).

Marcel from Pflugdorf, Germany, was the 2009 IDM German champion and UEM European champion. Last year he rode for Team Interwetten Honda at MotoGP WC in 125cc. Danny from Kent raced in the British Junior Motocross at six, was invited to join the MotoGP Academy at 14 and raced for Andalucia Cajasol GP team last year, finishing 10th overall.

Nicola Casadei (Team Manager Mahindra Racing), Mufaddal Choonia ( Team Principal Mahindra Racing), Alberto Strazzari (CEO of Engines Engineering Limited, M&M), Anoop Mathur ( President of two-wheeler sector, M&M) and Rusbeh Irani, Executive VP-Corporate Strategy and Mahindra Group Chief Brand Officer), were present at the launch.
