Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica has been seriously injured while taking part in a rally in Italy, Italian media reported Sunday.

The 26-year-old Renault driver has been taken to hospital with several fractures, reports said. There were no other immediate details of his injuries.

The Polish driver was at the wheel of a Skoda Fabia when he came off the road and struck a wall at San Lorenzo near Genoa, it was reported. His co—driver, Jacub Gerber, was unhurt.

A statement by the Lotus Renault F1 team said Kubica “suffered an accident at high speed” while competing in the Ronde di Andora rally.

“The driver was airlifted to Pietra Ligure Hospital where he is currently undergoing medical checks. His co-driver is fine,” the statement said.

The team said another statement would be issued when more was known about Kubica’s condition.

Kubica has been preparing for the start of the Formula One season in Bahrain on March 13 and last week had been testing the new Renault R31 car in Valencia, Spain.

He set the fastest time on the third and final day of testing in Valencia on Thursday.
