Lewis Hamilton is focused on doing what he likes best — winning F1 races — shutting out distractions over news reports about his intention to move on from McLaren Mercedes.
“I have to get those things sorted out; I do have people in the background working on that, negotiating. A lot of speculative stories going around aren’t true. I am 100 per cent focused on winning the world championship with this team, and taking them forward,” he said.
“I have been with McLaren since 13, and worked so hard to develop. I don’t get distracted by what gets written.”
The Briton was replying to queries about overtures from Mercedes.
When asked if his relationship with former McLaren team chief and present group chairman, Ron Dennis, was getting affected because of all this, Hamilton said: “We are all wise enough to understand that people will write (things), and what appears isn’t necessarily true. Ron (Dennis) and I go back a long way — almost 18 years.”
“I don’t interact with him a lot nowadays, because Martin (Whitmarsh) is the boss, but I get to meet Ron occasionally when he comes with the shareholders.”
Reflecting on a competitive season so far, Hamilton observed: “I think, this year it has to do with the changes.
“They (FIA) didn’t want one team disappearing into the distance. Changes are very similar, and people are getting better with their understanding of that.”
Street racing at the BKC roads is a welcome breather for this Briton in transit from the Italian GP win at Monza and looking at setting the pace over the next weekend at the Singapore GP.
He drove the MP4-27 car for 10 minutes opposite the Diamond Bourse, BKC, , delighting fans with an exhibition of street racing.
