They’ve switched to a new fashion formula. Design duo Shantanu and Nikhil who wow the fashion-conscious with their distinct couture sensibilities now tread a fresh track. In the midst of careening cars, screeching tyres, boisterous fans and glitzy girls, the style siblings are all set to grab attention with the chic costumes they’ve designed for the grid girls at the upcoming 2012 Formula 1 Airtel Indian Grand Prix.
“When we talk F1, glamour is the overriding element. It’s one of the widely watched sporting events on television. To us, F1 is synonymous with sport, luxury and high fashion. So our designs have to reflect that,” says Shantanu.
The association with F1 seems like a natural progression for the two designers who have worked extensively on collections for top-notch sports brands such as Adidas. “We are already well-versed in sports chic. So the idea of combining charm and practicality came naturally to us,” adds Shantanu.
Keeping in mind the fact that the girls have to sweat it out on the grid all day long, they have created short structured dresses. “The design has to reflect the spirit of racing. White aggressive lines cut across the body to define speed and velocity. The silhouettes are fitted, yet comfortable. Besides the lines, a black zipper on the front adds an interesting touch to the dress. Since the creations have to be high on style and at the same time practical, we had to concentrate on details instead of fussy embellishment.”
When you think F1, what instantly flash across the mind are cars in blazing hues. So Shantanu and Nikhil have stuck to a bright palette using resplendent red for that typical diva look. “There’s an inherent flamboyance about the colour and it looks striking when touched with racy white lines.” The band collars reminiscent of driver suits is a nice touch.
The duo completes the look with patent red footnotes. “It’s edgy style. Something that’s in sync with the edge-of-the-seat excitement at racing events.”
