Flavio Briatore succeeded in a French court on Tuesday in overturning a life ban handed down by the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council over race-fixing at last year’s Singapore Grand Prix.
Former Renault team principal Briatore was handed the punishment for his part in helping Fernando Alonso win the race through a crash from Nelson Piquet Jr but the Paris court has now rescinded the ban.
In reaching its verdict, the court held the evidence on which the FIA based its decision was too week and that Briatore’s defence lawyers were unable to question witnesses who gave their evidence anonymously.
Briatore has also demanded the FIA pay him 1 million euros ($1.43 million) in compensation for the damage to his reputation.
