Mahmudullah and Shakib bat well

February 18, 2010 02:55 am | Updated 02:55 am IST - Hamilton:

Mahmudullah and Shakib Al Hasan's 145-run seventh-wicket stand helped Bangladesh avoid the follow-on against New Zealand on the third day of the one-off Test on Wednesday. Bangladesh made 408 in its first innings, after which New Zealand was nine for one at close in its second essay.

Mahmudullah made a 177-ball 115 with 17 fours and two sixes. After a circumspect beginning, he went on to score his runs with great finesse.

Shakib picked the gaps with ease for his 15 boundaries. He consumed 104 balls for his 87.

The duo had rescued Bangladesh when the side was 196 for six. The partnership was a Bangladesh record for the seventh wicket.
