Kenyan marathon runner John Kelai hopes to win a place in the Kenyan squad for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on the basis of his performance in the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon (SCMM) 2014 to be held here on Sunday. Kelai won the 2010 CWG gold at New Delhi.

“I am 37 and experienced. If I do well here, it will send a signal to the Kenyan federation. Mumbai is a difficult marathon,” he said here on Thursday.

Kelai has won nine marathon races — Mumbai (2007 and 2008), Singapore (2003), Brussels (2004), Enschede, the Netherlands (2005 and 2010), Toronto (2007), CWG, New Delhi (2010) and Zhengkai, China (2013).

His main rivals at the SCMM 2014 would be Ethiopia’s Hailu Mekonnen and South African Gladwin Mzazi, who will be making his marathon debut. Mzazi had won the World University Games half-marathon title last year.
