Upset wins for Argentina, China

Argentina turned the form book upside down with a stunning 1-0 upset of reigning Olympic champion Germany in men’s hockey World Cup here on Tuesday.

The all-important goal in the fast-paced encounter came in the 31st minute through Manuel Brunet, who scooped the ball from an acute angle on the left. The ball ended in the net just inside the far post to the surprise of German goalkeeper Nicolas Jacobi.

The result opened up Group B, which also features The Netherlands and New Zealand, which rode on Andy Hayward’s three-goal act to hammer South Africa 5-0 for its second successive victory.

New Zealand now has six points from two games while The Netherlands has three from one match. Germany has three points from two matches, having beaten South Africa in its last outing.

Outstanding goals Earlier, two outstanding field goals from Yang Peng helped China upset England 3-0 in the women’s World Cup. China now has four points from two matches.

Women: Germany 3 (Marie Mavers 21, 65, Kristina Hillmann 50) bt South Africa 1 (Shelly Russell); China 3 (Yang Peng 42, 66, Melyu Liang 55).

On Monday: Women: The Netherlands 4 (Ellen Hoog 5, Marloes Keetels 31, Maartje Paumen 44, Roos Drost 49) bt Belgium 0.
