Getafe blanks Mallorca

March 15, 2010 12:09 am | Updated 12:09 am IST - MADRID:

Mallorca's ambitions of making next season's Champions League were damaged on Saturday by a 3-0 loss to Getafe in the Spanish league.

Daniel Parejo put Getafe ahead in the 31st minute, heading in Jaime Gavilan's cross from the left. Parejo turned provider in the 80th, as Nicolas “Miku” Ladislao latched on to his through pass to score, two minutes after coming on as a substitute.

Manuel del Moral converted a penalty in the 86th after Mallorca's Jose Carlos Nunes was sent off for handling the ball in the area.

The result left Mallorca fifth on 43 points and Getafe on eighth with 36 points.

Mallorca has been close to the Champions League spot in recent weeks due to its impressive home record of 11 wins in 12 games. However, its away form was terrible and this was its eighth loss.

At halftime, Mallorca coach Gregorio Manzano reshuffled his lineup, replacing Victor Casadesus and Julio Alvarez with Felipe Mattioni and Jose Luis Marti.

However, Getafe continued to apply pressure. Dudu Aouate kept Mallorca in the game by saving shots by Francisco Casquero and Pedro Leon early in the second half, before the host's late goals made sure of the result.

Tight game

In a tightly-contested game at Gijon's El Molinon Stadium, David Barral nearly put the host ahead in the second minute when his shot was intercepted by Fernando Amorebieta.

Gijon had lot of chances, with Jose Angel Valdes drawing a fine save from Gorka Iraizoz early in the second half.

For Bilbao, Gaizka Toquero was a constant threat, setting up a Markel Susaeta strike that went just wide before heading a cross wide himself in the 55th.

Five minutes later, Gijon's Juan Pablo Colinas saved a penalty taken by Igor Gabilondo after Valdes was ruled to have brought Toquero down in the area.

Gilardino sizzles

Alberto Gilardino's two goals gave Fiorentina a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Napoli in Saturday's only Serie ‘A' game.

The results:

Spanish League: Getafe 3 (Parejo 32, Miku 80, Manu del Moral 85-pen) bt Real Mallorca 0; Sporting Gijon 0 drew with Athletic Bilbao 0; Sevilla 1 (Fazio 21) drew with Deportivo La Coruna 1 (Adrian 24).

Italian League: Napoli 1 (Lavezzi (48), lost to Fiorentina 3 (Alberto Gilardino (60, 87), Stevan Jovetic (90)).
