Villarreal kept its hopes of Champions League football next season alive as Samu Castillejo’s 93rd minute winner secured a vital 1-0 win at Real Sociedad on Sunday.

Villarreal’s Bruno Soriano headed against the bar from point-blank range and substitute Nicola Sansone had a strong penalty appeal waived.

Yet, the visitor got its reward with the last attack of the game as Jaume Costa’s brilliant in-swinging cross was volleyed home first time by Castillejo.

On Saturday, Gareth Bale made an instant impact on his return from injury as Real Madrid extended its lead at the top with a 2-0 win over Espanyol.

Bale had only been on the pitch 13 minutes after three months on the sidelines due to ankle ligament damage when he swept home into the far corner seven minutes from time to round off a rapid Real counter-attack.
