Valencia misses the chance to go fourth

Espanyol salvages a draw through Garcia’s 94th-minute goal

Valencia missed the chance to move into fourth place in La Liga as Sergio Garcia’s 94th-minute goal salvaged a 3-3 draw for Espanyol in a crazy finale at Cornella El-Prat here on Saturday.

Mubarak Wakaso had given the host a deserved lead in first-half stoppage time, but Valencia improved greatly after the break and was level eight minutes after the restart when Ever Banega released Sergio Canales to score his first goal of the season.

Joan Verdu then restored Espanyol’s advantage nine minutes from time, but Valencia had appeared to have snatched all three points when two goals in four minutes from Jonas and Roberto Soldado handed it the lead for the first time in stoppage time.

Yet, with the last kick of the game Garcia outmuscled Victor Ruiz and lifted the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle to secure the host a point.

Elsewhere, Malaga got over the disappointment of its midweek elimination from the Champions League as Julio Baptista’s goal deep into injury time gave it a deserved 1-0 win over Osasuna.

Dramatic win for Siena

In the Italian league, Siena moved three points clear of Serie ‘A’ relegation zone with a dramatic 3-2 win at rock-bottom Pescara on Saturday.

Innocent Emeghara was the star for Siena, as his seventh goal in 11 matches proved the match-winner. Angelo and a Damiano Zanon own-goal put Siena ahead in the first-half, but Pescara drew level in the second thanks to Mervan Celik and Romulo Togni. Siena is now three points clear of relegation zone, while Pescara remains six points adrift at the foot of the table.
