After years of frustration, Karim Benzema seems to have finally realised his potential. The Real Madrid forward was left out of the squad four years ago but will lead France’s attack in Brazil. Yet, back in October of last year, this wasn’t a role he was certain to play.

A 16-month-long goalless spell for the national side was weighing heavily on Benzema’s confidence while Olivier Giroud had been prolific since the start of the season. However, goals against Ukraine and Finland in the qualifiers and a couple more in friendlies assured Didier Deschamps that the 26-year-old could replicate his club form for France.

Benzema’s 2013-14 La Liga campaign with Real Madrid was a resounding success too. He finished the season with 17 goals and nine assists; the latter figure was more significant as it suggests he’s a more rounded player now. Indeed, while Benzema remains a strong presence and clever finisher in the box, he has also developed an ability to bring others into play.
