Extra-time goals from Gareth Bale, substitute Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo from the penalty spot gave Real Madrid their 10th European crown in a 4-1 victory over city rivals Atletico Madrid in football’s Champions League final in Lisbon Saturday.

After Sergio Ramos headed a stoppage-time equalizer for Real, Bale headed in at the far post in the 110th minute after Angel di Maria ran past two defenders on the left and saw his shot parried by keeper Thibaut Courtois.

Marcelo put the result beyond doubt with two minutes of the extra period remaining with a shot from 20 metres, before Ronaldo made it four from the penalty spot before a crowd of 60,976 in the Estadio da Luz.

Atletico had come close to a first European title and wrecking Real’s dreams of La Decima - a 10th European title and first since 2002 - but Ramos rescued Real with his header from a corner three minutes into stoppage time Real keeper Iker Casillas was at fault for Atletico’s opening goal in the 36th minute through Uruguayan Diego Gordin.

Real had cleared a corner but when the ball came back into the area Casillas was caught in no man’s land trying to meet the ball.

Godin outjumped Sami Khedira and the defender’s header looped over Casillas and just over the line as the keeper desperately tried to claw the ball out.

Real’s attacking threat was nullified for most of the game but sustained late pressure was eventually rewarded, and Carlo Ancelotti’s side took complete control after Atletico ran out of steam in the extra period.

Ancelotti - in his first season at Real - becomes the first coach to win the Champions League for a third time after titles with AC Milan, and draws level with Liverpool’s Bob Paisley who won the old European Cup three times with Liverpool.
