Prayag United SC defeated George telegraph SC (GTSC) 3-2 in a Group A premier division encounter of the Calcutta Football League (CFL) at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday.
The third I-League outfit from the city began on a strong note winning its first CFL match 3-0 but suffered a reverse in its second outing losing by a solitary goal against Eastern Railway.
Needing a win to regain its title pursuit, United SC suffered an initial setback against GTSC, when the latter took the lead in the 34th minute off a goal from midfielder Shiladitya Seth.
United SC restored parity in the 36th minute when prolific Nigerian striker Ranti Martins found the mark off a solo effort (1-1).
Martins gave United SC the lead a minute from the half-time availing a 44th minute corner. Costa Rican World Cupper Carlos Hernandes showed his class with a brilliant finish to make it 3-1 for United SC almost immediately after the break.
Okorogor Nnabuike Praise scored a 72nd-minute penalty to make it 3-2 and brought GTSC back into the game. But United SC held on to the slender lead for the rest of the time to ensure full points from the encounter.
United SC tallied six points from three matches, while GTSC remained on two points after three outings.
The result: United SC 3 (Ranti Martins 36th, 44th, Carlos Hernandes 48th) bt George Telegraph SC 2 (Shiladitya Seth 34th, Okorogor Praise 72nd).
