Popular city football club, the Nethaji Sports Club, has initiated a campaign for the inclusion of Chennai as a venue for the 2017 Under-17 World Cup.

A FIFA delegation is in the country to inspect the various venues that had been proposed for the 2017 programme, and Chennai was not among them.

Citing that the city has the best stadium in India — the only one built to FIFA specifications — and hosted many international events, including the Nehru Cup and SAF Games, the Club felt that denying the Chennai the privilege of conducting the under-17 matches would be a travesty of justice.

Not willing to blame anyone for this lapse, the club, in a press release, made an appeal to the Government and the football-loving public to support the cause of football. “Let not the opportunity of hosting this major event go away,” it said.

The club plans to involve all football fans to request the State Sports Minister to take the necessary steps in this regard.
