MGU bounces back to swamp Burdwan

Down by two goals till the 38th minute, host Mahatma Gandhi University made a stunning comeback to thrash defending champion Burdwan 7-2 and enter the semifinal of the National inter-university football championship here on Sunday evening.

Eldhose George was the host’s hero scoring three goals while Dibin netted two and Chikko James and A.Y. Gireesh contributed one each.

“The boys were tense, they were under pressure. I took out Libin and brought in Eldhose Sunny, who is from the host Nirmala College here, on the left wing. That did the trick,” said Bino George, the MG coach after the victory.

In the semifinal, the host will meet Delhi which defeated Punjabi 5-4, via the tiebreaker. The two teams were level 1-1 at the end of the regulation period.

The results (quarterfinals): Mahatma Gandhi, Kottayam 7 (Eldhose George 38, 49, 93; Chikku James 66-pen; Dibin 72, 85; A.Y. Gireesh 76) bt Burdwan, Bengal 2 (Dileep Mondal 18, Sanjeev Borje 21); LNIPE, Gwalior 1 bt Mumbai 0; Delhi 5 bt Punjabi 4, via tiebreaker (full time 1-1).
