Spanish league leaders Barcelona said on Wednesday that the muscle injury suffered by Lionel Messi is not as serious as at first feared.
Messi tore the femoral biceps muscle in his right leg after scoring the first goal in Tuesday’s 2-2 Champions League quarterfinal draw against Paris St Germain.
The Barca medical team said “the normal recovery time for such an injury is around 10 days,” but did not say that the World Player will definitely miss the return leg against PSG on April 10.
Messi will miss Saturday’s league game at home to lowly Mallorca, meaning that his record-breaking run of scoring in 19 consecutive league matches is over.
The injury might also damage Messi’s chances of surpassing his record of 50 league goals established last season. He is currently on 43 with nine matches left.
After undergoing stringent tests, Messi wrote in his Twitter account: “I will be back soon. Fortunately this is nothing serious.”
