Leaders Liverpool lost their unbeaten record in this season’s English Premier League on Saturday as they were shocked 1-0 at home by Southampton.

Dejan Lovren headed the only goal of the game on 53 minutes and Liverpool could not break down a robust Southampton defence.

Everton is now the only unbeaten Premier League team, as they won 3-2 at 10-man West Ham thanks to two Leighton Baines free-kicks and a winner from Romelu Lukaku.

Sunderland remains bottom after a 3-0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion.

Liverpool had made their best Premier League start with three wins and a draw from their first four matches but was undone by Southampton, who moved up to fifth.

Steven Gerrard forced a couple of good saves from the Southampton goalkeeper but the home side missed the invention of the injured Philippe Coutinho and the suspended Luis Suarez.

And they were undone by defender Lovren’s header as he finished after Gerrard had blocked an initial effort on the goal-line.

The home side tried to force an equaliser but were unable to break down the Southampton defence as they won at Anfield for the first time in a decade.

Two brilliant free-kicks from Baines and a first goal for the club for Lukaku gave Everton a 3-2 win at West Ham, who had Mark Noble sent off when they were leading 2-1.

Hull City came from behind twice to win 3-2 at Newcastle thanks to Sone Aluko’s winner 15 minutes from time.

Aston Villa rode their luck as they won 1-0 at Norwich to move up to 12th place. Substitute Libor Kozak scored the only goal on 30 minutes after Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan had saved a Rob Snodgrass penalty, lifting them to 10th place.
