Liverpool beats Stoke in season opener

Liverpool won the first match of the Premier League season with a 1-0 win over Stoke City in a breathless opener at Anfield.

Daniel Sturridge scored the only goal on 37 minutes but Liverpool needed a brilliant late penalty save by Simon Mignolet to claim all three points.

Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic produced a string of stunning saves but was beaten by a stinging low shot from Sturridge.

Robert Huth hit the bar for Stoke and Kolo Toure did the same for Liverpool before Sturridge opened the scoring from 20 yards.

Begovic kept the score to 1-0, including one outstanding save from Jordan Henderson that he tipped onto the post and as Liverpool got nervous, Stoke won a penalty when Daniel Agger handled the ball in the box.

But Mignolet, playing his first Premier League match for Liverpool, saved from Jon Walters and then again from the follow-up by substitute Kenwyne Jones.
