Frank Lampard scored against his old club as 10-man Manchester City salvaged a 1-1 draw against Premier League leader Chelsea on Sunday.
On a day when Manchester United “threw the game away” as it was beaten 5-3 at Leicester, substitute Lampard volleyed the ball home five minutes from time to deny Chelsea.
Substitute Andre Schurrle had given Chelsea the lead against a City side which had dominated the first hour but had Pablo Zabaleta sent off for a second booking.
But just as Chelsea was looking to see time out, City found James Milner in space on the left and his first time volley found Lampard, who volleyed in.
Jose Mourinho’s side nevertheless extended its lead to three points while City moved up to sixth, five points behind.
Meanwhile, Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal admitted his team “gave the game away” as it was beaten at Leicester after a stunning second-half collapse which saw it ship four goals.
It is the first time United has ever lost from two goals up in the Premier League.
United led 2-0 after a Robin van Persie header and a brilliant chip from Angel di Maria. And though Leonardo Ulloa pulled one back, United seemed to have wrapped things up when Ander Herrera flicked in 12 minutes into the second half to make it 3-1.
But a penalty from David Nugent — a controversial decision by referee Mark Clattenburg given against Rafael — cut the deficit and an Esteban Cambiasso strike brought Leicester level before Jamie Vardy put it in front.
Yet another defensive error brought about the fifth goal as United defender Tyler Beckett was sent off for fouling Vardy in the area and Ulloa scored his second.
The results: Everton 2 (Lukaku 9, Baines 83-pen) lost to Crystal Palace 3 (Jedinak 30-pen, Campbell 54, Bolassie 69), Leicester 5 (Ulloa 18, 83-pen, Nugent 62-pen, Cambiasso 64, Vardy 79) bt Manchester United 3 (van Persie 13, di Maria 16, Herrera 57), Manchester City 1 (Lampard 85) drew with Chelsea 1 (Schurrle 71), Tottenham 0 lost to West Brom 1 (Morrison 74).
