Jenish shines for NCC

A heavy downpour could not dampen spirits as teams scored goals by the dozen at the 54th Subroto Cup inter-school football tournament here on Monday.

N.G. Jenish was the star of the day, scoring four goals as NCC — a combined team of units from West Bengal and Sikkim — slammed in 12 goals against Vivekananda Vidyapeeth, Raipur. S. Chittaranjan and L. Monish notched up hat-tricks each.

In another match, Betkuchi High School (Assam) sealed a last-eight spot with a 9-0 win against Tyne High School (J&K). Nayan Syoti Kuli scored a hat-trick while Rahul Gayary and Tridev Boro scored twice each.

Mizoram’s Government Middle School also reached the quarters with a 6-0 win, including a treble by Lalthansanga, over Don Bosco High School (Maharashtra).

In another match, St Xavier’s School (Jharkhand) blanked Mamata Modern Senior Secondary School (Delhi) 4-0, knocking the Delhi team out of the competition.

In the first quarterfinal on Tuesday, defending champion Greenwood School (Nagaland) will take on North Eastern English School (Manipur).
