Getafe rallies to hold Sociedad

January 19, 2014 10:41 pm | Updated May 13, 2016 10:41 am IST - BARCELONA:

Getafe erased a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw at home with Real Sociedad in the Spanish league on Sunday. Sociedad went ahead courtesy of headed goals by striker Imanol Agirretxe following crosses by Carlos Vela in the fourth and 16th minute, respectively. Getafe’s striker Ciprian Marica halved the difference in the 28th.

Sociedad goalkeeper Claudio Bravo denied Pedro Leon twice before the former Real Madrid midfielder volleyed in Diego Castro’s cross in the 52nd minute after teammate Borja Fernandez had hit the post. On Saturday, Real Madrid thrashed Rea Betis 5-0.

The whites employed their formidable offensive armoury to batter into submission a Betis team completely adrift at the bottom of the table.

It was Real’s most impressive away win of the season so far.

Cristiano Ronaldo completed a memorable week — which saw him win his second Ballon d’Or award on Monday — by opening the scoring in the 12th minute with an astonishing long-range drive.

Gareth Bale made it 2-0 14 minutes later with a left-footed free-kick, which Betis keeper Stephan Andresen should really have saved.

Luka Modric set up Karim Benzema to make it 3-0 just before half time, with his 100th goal for the whites.

Angel di Maria scored the fourth goal with a powerful left-foot volley after the shabby Betis defence had failed to clear a corner. Supersub Alvaro Morata completed the rout after good work down the left by Marcelo.

Afterwards, Morata confirmed he was going to stay at Real at least until the summer.

The results: Sunday: Getafe 2(Ciprian Marica 28, Pedro Leon 52) drew with Real Sociedad (Agirretxe 4 & 16). Saturday : Elche 2 (Albacar 19-pen, Marquez 79) bt Rayo Vallecano 0; Granada 0 drew with Osasuna 0; Espanyol 1 (Sergio Garcia 88) bt Celta Vigo 0; Real Betis 0 lost to Real Madrid 5 (Ronaldo 10, Bale 25, Benzema 45+1, Di Maria 61, Morata 90).
