Overlooked Stefan Kiessling could yet make it to this year’s World Cup if Germany coach Joachim Loew needs another striker for injury or lack-of-form reasons.
Bayer Leverkusen forward Kiessling has not been picked by Loew since 2010, and Loew reiterated in the magazine supplement of Friday’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung that Miroslav Klose and Mario Gomez are his preferred men up front.
But Loew also said: “I am ready to reconsider if someone gets injured or has poor form.” The veteran Klose has returned from injury at his club Lazio while Gomez, who also plays in Italy, at Fiorentina, has been sidelined for several months. The World Cup in Brazil is scheduled for June 12-July 13.
Loew was answering four-time Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel in an interview in which 45 German athletes, celebrities and politicians asked the questions.
