Football’s controlling body FIFA confirmed on Thursday that Germany captain Philipp Lahm was suspended for his side’s next World Cup qualifier.

The defender was booked in his side’s midweek 2-1 win in Austria in a group C World Cup qualifier. He had also been booked when Germany beat Faroe Islands 3-0 four days earlier.

The 2014 World Cup regulations stipulate that players who receive two bookings are automatically suspended for the next game.

Previously players were only suspended after the third booking.

Germany top the group with a maximum six points from their two games, ahead of Sweden and Ireland, who have three points.
