Durand Cup: Vasco SC enters quarterfinals

Vasco SC defeated Santa Cruz Club (SCC) via tie-breaker (4-3) to enter the quarterfinals in Pool ‘D’ of the preliminary round of the 127th Durand Cup, here on Tuesday.

With both the teams failing to break the deadlock in the regulation time, the match went into the tie-breaker.

After Royston Pereira’s penalty was saved by SCC goalkeeper Ram Saroop, Vasco’s Aniston Fernandes, Don Bosco Fernandes, Aiken Dias and Naveen Mendes were on target for the winner.

For SCC, Allwyn Fernandes, Joseph Dias and Mario Mascarenhas converted the penalties while Fredrick Endro and Richard Colaco’s shots were saved by Vasco custodian Francis Fernandes. Garwal Rifles, which got a walkover after Southern Samity failed to turn up, now meets Vasco in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The results: Vasco SC 0 bt Santa Cruz Club 0 (4-3 via tie-breaker); Garwal Rifles w/o Southern Samity.
